For over 30 years the youth services unit has provided interactive educational puppet shows using professional puppets, a stage, professional sound system and other props. The shows are related to all areas of safety and are tailored for children of all ages and developmental capacity, and teach valuable lessons of staying safe in their homes, neighborhoods and communities. The shows usually range from 30 minutes to 45 minutes and are conducted at schools, churches and other community based locations.

The Community Services Unit has been providing the children of the Guilderland community a Halloween safety presentation called “Halloween Extravaganza”. This is a program designed to give children and parents a fun night with emphasis on Halloween safety. Attendees enjoy arts and crafts, child safety ID cards, face painting, and food. The event takes place at town hall. In addition, there is a multi-media puppet show which provides children with a lesson on Halloween safety. Often the Halloween Extravaganza is used by parents as an alternative to trick-or-treating. The Extravaganza is provided free of charge to attendees with sponsoring support from many community members and businesses.

The units crime prevention officer coordinates with members of the community to provide crime prevention training. Some of the programs offered include personal safety, security surveys for homes and businesses, Neighborhood Watch, Mall Watch, National Night Out, and Rape Aggression Defense System (RAD).

Protecting Yourself After You Become A Victim

The officers of the community services unit become involved with our youth at the earliest age and continue those relationships throughout their school years, interacting with kids in a positive manner and providing guidance and support when needed. Members of the unit serve as positive role models through leadership, education, guidance and intervention.

The Community Services Unit is comprised of members of the patrol division, with specialties in youth services, crime prevention, police explorers and the RAD Program. Through education, presentations and community gatherings, the unit provides the highest quality community service to the residents, youth and businesses. Officers of the unit also are certified School Resource Officers.
