April 3, 2025

With April’s arrival, the first part of the proverb “April showers bring May flowers” is well on its way.  No educated guess yet on when the Western Turnpike Golf Course will open for the season but it is at least a week away.   Parks staff is continuing to prepare ballfields, hiking trails, and pool ready for use.   For some reason, Saturday, April 26 is a very popular day for community activities, with already seven events on the calendar. More details are shared below.

Town News & Announcements

Last Friday, Town staff, first responders, friends, and family celebrated the well-deserved retirement of EMS Director Jay Tyler with a walkout ceremony at EMS Station 1.  State Senator Pat Fahy and Assemblymember Gabrielle Romero presented legislative proclamations, and a beautiful sign was unveiled that names the new EMS Station III as Tyler Station.  Jay was instrumental in the planning and construction of the new ambulance facility.  Jay’s 21-year career with the Town had many significant achievements including the successful launch of a new advanced life support ambulance service (akin to an “Emergency Room on Wheels”), industry-setting initiatives to the pandemic, drafting State legislation to address long-lasting issues impacting EMS services, and the State DOH’s recognition of the EMS Department as EMS Agency of the Year.  The most lasting legacy is likely Jay’s compassion and dedication to the community.

Arbor Day

On Friday, April 25 from 1pm to 4pm, the Tree Preservation Committee is celebrating Arbor Day with handing out 110 tree seedlings, one per family, at Tawasentha Park. There will be 30 Sugar Maples, 30 Eastern Redbuds and 50 Concolor Firs. Each seedling will come with an informational packet of tree descriptions, planting instructions, and word games for kids. Town Arborist Tim Downey and Parks staff will also answer questions on tree planting and maintenance.

Clean Up Guilderland

The spring calendar is full of other activities, particularly on Saturday, April 26, while not Earth Day (April 22), has several pro-environment events, including from 11am to 1pm, Town Park Cleanup Day where you can pick one of the Town’s parks and open spaces, and volunteer to help clean up trash and litter.  You can pick up bags at Tawasentha Park at the event or at the Park & Recreation Office, opposite Tawasentha Park’s entrance, between 8am and 3pm on Monday, April 21 through Friday, April 25.  You can get more information by calling the Parks & Rec Office at (518) 456-3150 or by emailing Parks Foreman Dave Jenkins at jenkinsd@togny.org.

Clean Up Guilderland (Western Ave.)

At the same time, the Town is also supporting Clean Up Guilderland, an annual spring event to pick up litter on Western Avenue, other streets, and neighborhoods.   You can do it alone or gather a group, with supplies provided.  Please call Kathy Burbank at (518) 461-8032 or by email at kburbank01@gmail.com.

I Love My Parks

On Saturday, May 3 from 10am to 1pm at Tawasentha Park, the Town celebrates I Love My Park Day, a State-wide volunteer effort, by removing invasive species, garden beautification efforts, and a scavenger hunt.   More information is available by calling the Parks & Rec Office at (518) 456-3150 or by emailing Parks Foreman Dave Jenkins at jenkinsd@togny.org.

Parks & Rec’s April Break Fun And Games take places from Monday, April 14 through Thursday, April 17 from 9am to 11m each day at Guilderland Elementary School.  The program is for students in grades 1 to 6 who reside in Town or are students in the Guilderland Central School District.  The day will start with warm-up tag games followed by games such as Jailbreak, Pins Down, Survivor, Seven-Base Kickball, Indoor Soccer, Basketball and more.  The registration deadline is Friday, April 11.

Park & Rec is also seeing very high interest, with 476 registrations on the first day, for the 2025 Summer Program.  The program takes place from Monday, June 30 to Friday, August 8, with one-week half-day camps, swimming lessons, and dozens of sports and enrichment camps.  The printed lime-colored 2025 brochures are available at Town Hall and the Park & Rec’s Office, and will be delivered by back-pack mail at schools before the Spring break.

Summer Camp

Summer Camp

Parks & Rec is accepting applications through Tuesday, April 15 for summer positions including camp counselors, lifeguards, lifeguard manager, and pool booth attendants.  There are also seasonal laborer positions at the golf course and parks maintenance. Salaries depend on position.  Please contact the Parks & Recreation office at 518-456-3150, between 8am and 3:30pm on weekdays with any questions.

Parks & Rec’s Pickleball for Beginners takes place from Monday, June 2 to Friday, June 6 from 9am to 11am at Tawasentha Park.  The course can advance your Pickleball game from beginner to an advanced beginner/intermediate player, and also learn the basic skills and rules of the sport.   Paddles, if needed, and balls will be provided.

Please remember that, in all Town parks and open spaces, dogs must be on a leash at all times.  Your dog may be very friendly, but hikers and park patrons do not know that and the presence of an unleashed dog can be disconcerting.   The exceptions to this rule are the Town’s two dog parks at Nott Road Park and behind EMS Station 1 in Westmere.

The draft Comprehensive Plan Update is currently being reviewed by the Planning Board and its report to the Town Board should be ready this month.  When completed, the Planning Board’s report will be posted online.  The Town Board will likely schedule its next public hearing on the draft in May.  You can follow the review progress on the Town’s website.  You can access the Comprehensive Plan Update and its appendices online or review hard copies at the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall.

Please remember that Highway crews only pick up lawn bags and tied brush and will not vacuum leaves until fall.   Leaf piles should be bagged.  The Highway Department has also completed its sweeping of sidewalks and is now sweeping streets and cleaning out stormwater drains.

The Town’s Senior Services Department’s April newsletter has information about classes and seminars, book discussions, tax preparation assistance, trips, medical and shopping transportation, next month’s book discussion, legal aide, monthly meal calendar, games, and much more.  On Wednesdays from 11am to 12:30pm, the Guilderland Public Library is the home for Senior Connects!, where seniors can have a friendly chat on a wide-range of interesting topics.  The prior topics included home downsizing, senior resources, hobbies, books, movies, favorite day trips, and local events.  No registration is required.

Please remember that, if your home has a septic system or cesspool that adversely impacts certain designated waterbodies, you may be eligible for reimbursement for replacement costs under the Septic System Replacement Fund Program.  The program reimburses eligible property owners with grants for up to 50% of the costs (up to $10,000) of their eligible septic system projects. Grants are awarded only to those septic system projects that will significantly and quantifiably reduce environmental and/or public health impacts from cesspools or septic systems.   You can check your property’s eligibility by entering your property’s address.  This rare opportunity is a collaboration between the State, County, and Town, and property owners to address a pressing environmental and public health issue.

The Town is accepting letters of interest and resumes from candidates for Police Officer, Telecommunicator/911 Dispatcher, and Laborer positions in the Highway, Parks and Water Departments.

Upcoming Meetings at Town Hall

The following is a list of dates and times for currently scheduled meetings of boards and committees at Town Hall over the next 30 days.  Please check the Town’s calendars for the latest news about public meetings and community events, possible changes in agendas and cancellations, and the latest contents of agenda packets.  Unless stated otherwise, each of the listed meetings start at 7pm, and are livestreamed on the Town website, Verizon channel 34, and Spectrum channel 1303.  Within days of the meeting, an indexed recording, with links to each listed agenda item, is also posted online.

On Tuesday, May 6 at 6:15pm, the Guilderland Historical Society is joining with the Guilderland Public Library, and the Town's American Revolution 250th Anniversary Committee for the launch of a Book Club featuring the Revolution.  This series at the Library starts with Rick Atkinson's award-wining book The British Are Coming.  Registration for this special event is open from Monday, April 7 at 9:30am to Monday, May 6, 2025 at Noon.

The Library is hosting a Book Sale from Friday, May 2 through Sunday, May 4, and is seeking donations for the sale.  Donations of gently used books, board games, puzzles, books on CD, and DVD/Blu-rays are appreciated.  Volunteers will be present to collect donations. The sale proceeds will benefit the Library’s programs and services.

The Albany Pine Bush Preserve’s upcoming calendar, includes on this Sunday, April 6 at 9am, Junior Birders, when students aged 11 to 17 years with an adult, can explore the Yellow Trail at Karner Barrens and look for birds.  On Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30pm, the Preserve and DEC are sponsoring, both in-person and virtual, How to Compost at Home or in Your Local Community, where you can learn more about how you can manage your food waste, with tips to reduce wasted food and how you can compost at home.

On Thursday, May 15 at 7pm, the Preserve is hosting a seminar entitled Butterfly and moth diversity in Preserve, when you can learn more about high diversity of winged insects in the Preserve’s barrens habitats, highlight the species found in the Preserve, and explain how these species are managed and monitored to both protect them and to learn how management decisions are affecting the Preserve overall.  On Wednesday, June 25 at 7pm, you can join in National Butterfly Count Volunteer Training, when you can learn about butterflies habitat in the Preserve and how you can participate in the 2025 National Butterfly Count.

As noted above, Saturday, April 26 is a popular day for community events, including the National Drug Take Back Day from 10am to 2pm at the Guilderland Public Library’s auxiliary parking lot.   This event allows residents to responsibly dispose of unused, expired or unneeded prescription medications.  The event is free and anonymous.  Research shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends from home medicine cabinets.  Please remember that no needles are accepted.

4.26.2025

Recycling Extravaganza

At the same day and time, the Guilderland Central School District is sponsoring the Guilderland Recycling Extravaganza in Farnsworth Middle School’s front parking lot from 8am to 2pm, when you drop off sneakers, bikes, cardboard, plastics, clothing, electronics (but not TVs), cell phones, and gently used instruments.  Please take a look at the list of acceptable and unacceptable donations, and vendor details.

A reminder that DOT is replacing State Route 146’s bridge over the Normans Kill, just past Tawasentha Park’s entrance as you proceed towards Guilderland Center and Altamont.  A temporary bridge will be installed to keep both lanes open, and accessible by first responders and residents.  The anticipated two-year project involves the total replacement of the bridge, with two lanes and a multi-use (bicycle & pedestrian) trail that will connect Tawasentha Park and the Winter Recreation Area.  The next stage will include extending the multi-use trail to Western Avenue.
