March 20, 2025

Spring arrives today at 5:01am, when daylight and nighttime are “nearly” equal, unless I missed an Executive Order.  March’s unpredictable weather has continued, with sunny warm weather over the past few days, and snow overnight, but hopefully not enough to impact travel.   Town staff are continuing to ready ballfields, trails, and the golf course for your enjoyment.  No informed guess yet on when the golf course will open, but the NY Mets will open their 2025 season next Thursday.  More details are shared below.

Town News & Announcements

At its Tuesday meeting, the Town Board held its second public hearing on the Comprehensive Plan Update, with 11 speakers providing comments, and Board members began to share comments on the draft.   Under State law, the Town Board must await the Planning Board’s report on the draft.  The Planning Board is well into its required review, and it will likely take two or more meetings to complete its review.  When completed, the Planning Board’s report will be posted online, with a good chance that interim reports will be made available.  The Town Board will likely schedule its next public hearing on the draft in May after receiving the Planning Board’s final report.   You can access the Comprehensive Plan Update and its appendices online or review hard copies at the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall.

Today at 3pm at the Guilderland Public Library, the Guilderland Historical Society will hold a presentation at 3pm by Dave Bourque, President of Historical Altamont, Inc. about the Village’s “StoryMap” which highlights the Village’s history, parks, cemeteries and other attractions.  The presentation will be followed by updates by Albany County USA-250 Commissioners Jeff Perlee (Chair) and Mark Jones, and Gardner Gurney of the Town’s American Revolution 250th Anniversary Committee about efforts to shed light on the persons, places, and events that occurred in and around our community before, during, and after the American Revolution.  The presentations will be preceded by the Society’s business meeting at 2:30pm.

Garden Club

On Monday, April 14 from 10am to 1pm, the Guilderland Garden Club will hold a meeting at Town Hall, with a presentation at 11am by The Capital District Audubon Society about how to prevent and reduce bird collisions with glass windows and doors, and buildings.  Every year, thousands of birds are lost or hurt by avoidable collisions.

Parks & Rec has opened registration for its popular spring school break program.  April Break Fun And Games will take place from Monday, April 14 through Thursday, April 17 from 9am to 11m each day at Guilderland Elementary School.  The program is for students in grades 1 to 6 who reside in Town or are students in the Guilderland Central School District.  The day will start with warm-up tag games followed by games such as Jailbreak, Pins Down, Survivor, Seven-Base Kickball, Indoor Soccer, Basketball and more.

Parks & Rec has opened registration for Pickleball for Beginners which will take place from Monday, June 2 to Friday, June 6 from 9am to 11am at Tawasentha Park, when you can improve your Pickleball game from beginner to an advanced beginner/intermediate player, and learn the basic skills and rules of the sport.  Paddles, if needed, and balls will be provided.  The Town’s pickleball courts are already in use, with four courts each at Tawasentha Park and Nott Road Park.  Additional courts at Nott Road should be ready for use this spring.

The Town’s trail system is beginning to dry up with little rain over the past few days but there are muddy and slippery conditions.  Please remember that, in all Town parks and open spaces, dogs must be on a leash at all times.  Your dog may be very friendly, but hikers and park patrons do not know that and the presence of an unleashed dog can be disconcerting.  The exceptions to this rule are the Town’s two dog parks at Nott Road Park and behind EMS Station 1 in Westmere.  Please also note that Western Turnpike Golf Course has historically opened in early April, depending on fickle early spring weather, and that walking is not allowed on golf cart paths during the golf season.

With spring cleanup underway, please remember that Highway crews only pick up lawns bags and tied brush and will but vacuum leaves until fall.  Leaf piles should be bagged.  The Highway Department is beginning to sweep streets, clean out stormwater drains, and also start sweeping more than 50-miles of sidewalks.

Please remember that, if your home has a septic system or cesspool that adversely impacts certain designated waterbodies, you may be eligible for reimbursement for replacement costs under the Septic System Replacement Fund Program.  I know several homeowners have taken advantage of this program to upgrade their septic systems. The program reimburses eligible property owners with grants for up to 50% of the costs (up to $10,000) of their eligible septic system projects. Grants are awarded only to those septic system projects that will significantly and quantifiably reduce environmental and/or public health impacts from cesspools or septic systems.   You can check your property’s eligibility by entering your property’s address.  This rare opportunity is a collaboration between the State, County, and Town, and property owners to address a pressing environmental and public health issue.

With spring arriving, you might want to consider reserving a pavilion at Tawasentha Park for family outings and local business events.  Walk-in reservations (with payment) have priority over phone, faxed or emailed reservation requests (with payment).  To request booking a pavilion, please submit a completed Request for Use of Facilities/Know the Rules and required payment (credit card, check or cash) to the Town of Guilderland. You can drop off the required forms or mail them to Guilderland Parks & Recreation Department at 181 State Route 146, Altamont, NY 12009, or faxed to 518-456-3156.   You can view the availability calendar for Tawasentha Park Pavilion Rentals.

The Town’s Senior Services Department’s March newsletter has information about classes and seminars, tax preparation assistance, trips, medical and shopping transportation, next month’s book discussion, legal aide, monthly meal calendar, games, and much more.  On Wednesdays from 11am to 12:30pm, the Guilderland Public Library is the home for Senior Connects!, where seniors can have a friendly chat on a wide-range of interesting topics.  The prior topics included home downsizing, senior resources, hobbies, books, movies, favorite day trips, and local events.  No registration is required.

Parks & Rec is now accepting applications for summer positions including camp counselors, lifeguards, lifeguard manager, and pool booth attendants.  There are also seasonal laborer positions at the golf course and parks maintenance.  Applications are due by Tuesday, April 15, and interviews will take place in May.   Salaries depend on position.   Please contact the Parks & Recreation office at 518-456-3150, between 8am and 3:30pm on weekdays with any questions.

As you may have heard, a recent published study in Science magazine has shown that butterfly populations across the nation have experienced dramatic declines for certain species by as much as 22% (roughly 1 in 5) across 554 recorded species in 20 years.  The Preserve is actually experiencing the opposite, with increased populations of the Karner Blue butterfly due to careful and consistent habitat restorations.  You can help the Preserve in monitoring its diverse butterfly populations by attending a science lecture on Thursday, May 15 at 7pm, entitled Butterfly and moth diversity in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, when you can learn more about high diversity of winged insects in the Preserve’s barrens habitats, highlight the species found in the Preserve, and explain how these species are managed and monitored to both protect them and to learn how management decisions are affecting the Preserve overall.  On Wednesday, June 25 at 7pm, you can join in National Butterfly Count Volunteer Training, when you can learn about what butterflies habitat in the Preserve and how you can participate in the 2025 National Butterfly Count.
