  Weekly Newsletter No. 129

After nearly six weeks with nearly perfect weather, the Highway Department’s schedule for vacuuming accumulated piles leaves ends tomorrow.  Highway crews plan to make one more sweep of the Town roads, if weather permits.  With snow covered and wet leaf piles, it is much more difficult and time consuming when using loaders, and it is time to conclude this effort.  More details are below.

Town News & Announcements

A reminder that the Parks & Recreation’s annual Evergreen Holiday Centerpiece Workshop is next Tuesday, December 17 from 1pm to 5pm.  It is a fun opportunity to create your own holiday centerpiece decorated with mixed greens, pine cones, berries, candles (all of which are provided), and anything else that you would like to add.  You will need to bring gloves and heavy-duty clippers.  Please make sure to arrive before 4:30pm at the Parks & Rec. office at 181 State Route 146, across from Tawasentha Park’s entrance.  The deadline for registering is this Sunday, December 15, with a $20 charge for materials to make one centerpiece.  You can also call (518) 456-3150 or stop by the Parks & Rec. office.

The Parks & Rec.’s popular Winter Break Fun & Games returns over the Christmas holiday for children in grades 1 to 6.  This activity takes place at Guilderland Elementary School’s gym on Thursday, December 26; Friday, December 27; Monday, December 30; and Tuesday, December 31, from 9am to 11am.   After warm-up tag games, there will be games such as Jailbreak, Pins Down, Survivor, Seven-Base Kickball, Indoor Soccer, Basketball and more.

The Highway Department’s schedule for vacuuming leave piles, which started back on October 10, ends tomorrow.  If weather allows and snow melts, there will one last Town-wide sweep next week.  I thank the Highway crews for their excellent work.  I have received dozens of appreciative comments from residents about the crew’s care and professionalism.  All but a few trucks have been switched over to winter duties.  Please note that Highway crews circulate year-round to pick-up lawn bags, discarded Christmas trees, and tied brush.  Please remember to remove obstructions, like basketball hoops, from the paved surface, and remember that, except when allowed on posted street sign, no overnight parking is permitted on Town roads from November 1 to April 1.

With the season’s closing of the Western Turnpike Golf Course, the cart paths are now open for walking.  It has proven very popular since the cart paths were open off-season during the pandemic and continued thereafter.    Should sufficient snow arrive, the course will have snowshoeing and groomed cross-country skiing.   The Parks & Recreation Department has snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals.

The Town’s 2025 Hometown Heroes Banner Program recognizes active duty and veteran service members, both living and deceased, for their bravery, courage, and sacrifice.  Each banner honors a current or former Guilderland serviceperson by name, branch of service, and photo.  The banners will be displayed at Tawasentha Park at a special event held at GPAC.  In late fall, the banners are made available to sponsors.  Banners may be sponsored by individuals, families, businesses or organizations at a cost of $150 per banner.  The deadline for applications is February 28, 2025.  If you have any questions regarding banners, please call the Parks & Rec Office at (518) 456-3150.

The Town’s Senior Services Department’s December newsletter has information about classes and seminars, trips, medical and shopping transportation, book discussions, legal aide, community meals calendar, games, and much more.   Every Wednesday from 11am to 12:30pm, the Guilderland Public Library is the home for Senior Connects!, where seniors can have a friendly chat on a wide-range of interesting topics.  The prior topics included home downsizing, senior resources, hobbies, books, movies, favorite day trips, and local events.  No registration is required.

The Town is accepting letters of interest and resumes from candidates for Payroll Specialist, Automotive Mechanic I, Police Officer, Telecommunicator/911 Dispatcher, and Laborer positions in the Highway, Parks and Water Departments.

Community Events & Resources

I thank the members of the Guilderland Garden Club and Guilderland Historical Society for their beautiful seasonal decorating of the historic Mynderse-Frederick House for the annual greens show.  The historic home, whose first floor was just painted, had holiday music, and fresh greens, handmade ornaments and decorations made by Garden Club members.

The Albany Pine Bush Preserve’s fall calendar is full of activities, including tomorrow at noon, with a Lunchtime Hike, when you can take a 0.9-mile loop over rolling sand dunes and some stairs, and enjoy winter scenery and fresh air.  If the snow remains, snowshoes will be provided.  On December 23 at 10am, there is Photos and Frost, when you can enjoy 0.9 mile and learn the difference between frost and snow and tips and tricks on how to photograph ice crystals, snow, and things covered in frost.  No special equipment is needed, and snowshoes will be provided if necessary.

The Guilderland Public Library has several interesting events, including on Sunday, December 22 at 2pm, when Suburban Sounds Community Chorus presents its annual holiday concert.  On Tuesday, December 17 from 12:30pm to 5:30pm, the Library is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive.

The Altamont Free Library’s calendar has events for all ages, including Yoga Storytime on Saturday, December 21 from 9am to 10am, when you can learn more about yoga with yoga instructor and Library trustee Christine Carpenter.  The program is designed for kids ages 4 through 8 and their adults and no yoga experience is needed. Signup is required by calling (518) 861-7239 or emailing staff@altamontfreelibrary.org.

On Saturday, December 21, from 1pm to 3:30pm, Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy is celebrating the winter solstice with a grand opening celebration of the 225-acre addition to the Bozen Kill Preserve.  There will be hot beverages to warm up before heading out for a guided tour of the new trails.

The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA are asking for your support to adopt a family for this holiday season.   If you are interested in adopting a family, please reach out to Kathy Burbank at kburbank@gmail.com.

I had the opportunity on Tuesday to meet volunteers and staff at Community Caregivers’ annual open house.  It was an opportunity to learn more about the services offered by Community Caregivers, ranging from driving residents to medical appointments and shopping, providing respite time for persons caring for loved ones, assistance with paperwork, visitation, lunchtime chats, and more helpful services.  You can help your community by volunteering your time and/or making donations.

Town Hall will be closed at 12:30pm on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day, and again at 12:30pm on New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter.
